EU-China Cooperation on Sustainable Development with a Special Focus on Smart Cities

2015 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the European Union and China.

With the increasingly important role of China in the world economy, its expanding relations with the European Union have growing significance. 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the European Union and China. In the past 40 years, the cooperation has deepened in the field of politics, trade and people-to-people relations, which was formalised in the framework of a strategic partnership in 2003.

On the occasion of the anniversary and based on the results and decisions of the 17th EU-China Summit, Talentbase Ltd., the Antall József Knowledge Centre, and the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies (WMCES) are organising an international panel session entitled “EU-China Cooperation on Sustainable Development with a Special Focus on Smart Cities” as part of the Annual Polis Conference on "Transport Innovation for Sustainable Cities and Regions" on 20 November 2015 in Brussels.

The panel session will give an insight into the current development of the strategic dialogue concerning sustainable urban development between EU-China policy makers focusing on smart cities. There is no standard definition of a smart city, but cities with an effective management of their own resources and the provision of basic services can be regarded as smart. The smart city concept represents an approach to the complex city modernisation process.

The topic of the panel session is in line with the 2015 event of SUSCO Budapest, AJKC’s international conference on sustainable development held in Budapest.
